Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve, is such a special time for me and I will delve into in a minute. But first, there is some explaining to do. There are two treasures in my life that mean the world to me; my two sons, Micah and Aaron. Both are now fine young “men” whom I could not be more pleased with or proud of. They are not only my sons, but truly two of my best friends in life. And yes ( as the family joke goes ) I do have to occasionally remind them from time to time, that they will never be as good looking or as smart as me but it’s something that they should pursue and overcome; though the first part of that equation is in serious doubt. Please, not one word from any of you to them that I relinquish the “good looking” part as I will never hear the end of it. I digress. For a number of years now, both sons have gone to their mother’s grandparent’s house on Christmas eve to celebrate the season with their mom, grandparents, aunts and uncles and a slew of cousins. It is a fine family tradition. They return usually mid morning Christmas day where we have our own newly established “Christmas breakfast” tradition consisting of biscuits and gravy, eggs, pancakes and the like. (Micah makes excellent blueberry pancakes – yum!).
Then it’s Christmas around the tree with just us guys. So, with that said, it’s back to why Christmas Eve is a special time for me.
With the house empty on this all important Eve, I have established my own little tradition with myself which brings to me a warmth of comfort. I start out thinking of my childhood Christmases with my mom and dad, older brother and myself, and never fail to realize that they are some of the most special of all childhood memories. There was also the family dog, a lovely cocker spaniel known in the house as “Miss Murphy”, who lived to be a grand old age of seventeen. Every year she would have her very own gift under the tree, usually a little squeaky toy of some kind which she had already sniffed out days before, but never once dug it out from the myriad of other wrapped gifts until she heard the words, “go ahead Murphy, get your present”, at which time she would dig through the gifts and pull out just her own gift and excitedly chewed off the paper to reveal the prize inside. She was always just as excited as us kids. Back now to time present and my yearly tradition.
It’s time for….the food!! It is nothing extravagant but oh so tasty to me. It simply consists of a rather large proportion of steamed shrimp, (peeled but tail still on), chilled just so, and a bowl of tangy cocktail sauce for dipping the tasty little morsels into. To go with it, a couple of hearty scrumptious crab cakes – ummm. My mouth just started drooling in anticipation. I could live off of this if weren’t for the high cholesterol level that goes along with it, but what the hey…it’s Christmas Eve and I can’t dance so why not. But then comes the best part of the evening. The movie. It is one of my all time favorites that is only watched by me once a year, that being Christmas Eve. “It’s a Wonderful Life”, staring Jimmie Stewart and Donna Reed. I’m sure most all of you have seen it and if not, may I persuade you into doing so. There’s a reason why it’s named one of the top five films ever made. It is magical.

After being enthralled in the excellence of this fantastic story, it always, and I mean always, makes me grateful for what life has issued me so far. All the ups and downs, the tragedies and the ecstasies. It reminds me that one man can make a difference in the lives of others, and that is a responsibility we should all take very seriously. This is when I spend a little personal time with my creator, humbly thanking Him for the gift given to us all. This, my dear friends, is my Christmas Eve tradition and why to me, this Eve is so very special, yes, special indeed.

Merry Christmas to all of you my friends and remember… it’s all about love.

Peace…

Christmas Eve
