Artist's Description

An old millstone lying in the River Dove at Milldale in Staffordshire, England.

Records indicate that a mill was working in approximately this vicinity in 1775 and it is extremely likely that this millstone is a relic of that mill. The mill crushed calamine, which was mined locally; the higher quality calamine was used by drug firms and the lower quality was used in the brass making process. Sometime in the 1870s the mill closed down, but it stood derelict for a further 50 years.

The millstone is located just to the north of Viator’s Bridge and close to the little building which is now called, the Milldale Barn. The barn was once a stable for the Mill’s horses. The constant flow of river water beneath the millstone appears to be eroding the under surface, because it looks quite thin compared with other millstones. It has become an attraction for visiting children who use it as a stepping stone to cross the river.

This millstone was a runner stone, showing the Spanish Cross carving at the hub. The surface of the millstone bears ten harps, which are in the typical pattern of furrows and lands. Millstones were used in watermills and windmills for grinding wheat and other grains. They were worked in pairs, with the bed stone on the bottom and the runner stone on top.
