Artist's Description

The pier at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, in North Yorkshire, England. With a stormy sky, gale force, icy cold winds and a choppy sea, emphasized by the massive surf; this dramatic coastal scene shows the award winning Saltburn Pier. The 1,500 feet long pier, with a landing stage for steamers at the pier head, was designed by engineer John Anderson, and was opened in 1869.

After restoration work in 2000, the pier reopened on 13 July 2001 as a Grade II listed building. In October 2005 it won a top placing in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Heritage awards. A further award followed in 2009 when it was awarded pier of the year, by the National Piers Society, after under deck lighting had been installed,
