I was in the middle of doing features for two different groups, yesterday afternoon, when Jimmy called and told me to drop everything and take the camera outside. He told me that in ten minutes it would be too late. It wasn’t an easy thing to do. The wind chill factor made it seem like it was 17 degrees out and there was snow all over the ground. So I three on another sweat shirt and sweater, but I didn’t have time to change out of my sweatpants and tennis shoes. I definitely didn’t have time to get out the tripod.

I ran across the street to the park (well, if you can call stumbling and sliding on the ice running). The late afternoon sunlight was highlighting the mountain peaks to the southwest. It was a beautiful sight! Unfortunately, there was a boxcar sitting on the tracks, next to the park, that was blocking that view of the mountains. If I had photographed those beautiful mountain peaks, all I would have gotten would have been the top of them over the boxcar.

I had to settle for the view, directly east of us, where the sun was highlighting the trees. You can see how intense the light was by looking at the traffic sign in the lower right side of the photo.

I wasn’t able to get many photos because it was horribly cold. I haven’t figured out how to take pictures with gloves on and I finally found out what people mean by the phrase, “bone chilling cold”. It got to the point where I couldn’t feel what my hands were doing and had to run back home. A couple of minutes after I got back inside, the real pain hit. It felt like somebody was twisting my fingers out of joint. I didn’t know that I had that many nerve endings in my hands! If Jimmy calls tonight and tells me that the Northern Lights are swirling around the moon with a rainbow cutting through, I’m not going to go outside with the camera. It’s supposed to get down to 7 degrees tonight!

I took the title of the photo from the song, “It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas”, which has been running through my mind for the past couple of days. Now that we finally have snow on the ground here, in the valley, it looks like we’ll have a White Christmas this year.

Photo taken in Columbia Falls, Montana (USA) with a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS camera. Columbia Mountain, which is part of the Rockies, is in the background.
