Artist's Description

This was taken at the Columbia River, across from Vantage, Washington (USA). I’m uploading it for the November Avatar challenge in the Welcome to Washington group.

This view is appropriate for the month of Thanksgiving, because it takes me back to a time when buildings didn’t cover the face of this country and I am thankful that we still have places to go where we can enjoy an unspoiled view. Just think about the fact that this is basically the same view that the pioneers had, when they crossed this country in their covered wagons.

The bush is sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), one of my favorite wild plants.

“Native Americans used sagebrush administered internally as a medicine to halt internal bleeding caused by battle wounds and childbirth. The plant is very toxic to internal parasites and was used to expel worms. The plant’s oils are toxic to the liver and digestive system of humans if taken internally, with the toxic symptoms subsiding 24–48 hours after ingesting the plant.

A tea made from sagebrush was used internally and as a topical dressing to treat infections by Native Americans in the Mountain West of North America. Woven sagebrush was used to make sandals in prehistory." [from the wikipedia article]

I’m not sure what the dead flowers in front are. If anybody recognizes these flowers, please let me know in a comment.

Photo taken in September, 2010 with a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS camera.
