Artist's Description

Created in Illustrator, 2008.

Hong-Sau is Sanskrit for “I am He”. It is also known as “Wild Gander” (no matter how far the mind wanders, it always returns home). Hong-Sau is an ancient meditation technique that calms, centers, and energizes the mind and body.

In Hong-Sau, the meditator attunes the mind to the naturally occurring inflow and outflow of the breath. During inhalation, one mentally chants the word “Hong”. During exhalation, the word “Sau”. The Hong-Sau mantra is not spoken aloud (there is no vocalization or movement of the tongue); it is chanted in the mind.

As the meditator goes deeper into the technique, he/she will discover the phase of “breathlessness” that manifests between the end of one exhalation and the beginning of the next inhalation. This breathless state is not to be confused with holding the breath; it happens all on its own.

The longer one practices the Hong-Sau technique, the longer the periods of breathlessness become, accompanied by feelings of bliss – direct experience and realization of the body, the mind, and one’s deeper identity beyond both of them. Hong-Sau can be practiced by anyone, any time, anywhere.
