We stood alone, together, holding fast against the winds of rock-strewn sand into which we had emerged. Mountains of red tinder surrounded us, controlled us, blocked our forward way; while trees of empty air hung high above us, obscuring us in their shadows, filling us with their fear & doubt & loneliness.

There was a light in the sky, a dark light, a grey light, a light that shone between us with a soft, separating beam. Once, its glow would have joined us, taken us, bound us within its passion. Not now. Not after this.

Not after everything.

In the distance, a single moment of time shone, perfect, pristine. It floated preciously before us, glittering in the frozen sky; but as we approached, it drove our paths apart. Soon, we were invisible to each other; & all time vanished.

We were adrift, alone forever, in the desperate landscape known as lost love.
