My Monarch Butterfly

My Monarch Butterfly

At my elementary school, there was a big, green, grass field
And out in that field there were dandelions
And out on those dandelions were Monarch Butterflies
The kind that I’d catch in my hand-
When my hand was really only big enough to catch the nearest cold
There were hundreds of butterflies in that green, grass field
And each new catch came with a few amused eyes and screams of glee
I saw these butterflies as such a weightless creature, it was as if someone cradled the falling leaves of autumn and gave them a chance never to hit the ground as if to say “you are too beautiful to get swept away by the wind of the cold harsh winter.”
And here I come along, my human hands, extended in curiosity, every inch of my outstretched arm is my human need for power over something that is frailer than myself
And I capture it.
And for a second it flutters it’s soft wings in my hand and it feels like my own personal Eskimo kiss
And I am satisfied.
So I put it back on the grass, and it flies away
But for that second, I held something so beautiful in my hand.

Now I have my very own Monarch Butterfly.
I carry it with me everywhere…
But every time the thought of you wriggles into my mind
It takes off.
It’s dances it’s way through my stomach
Floats in my diaphragm
And skips right to my heart, which skips right along with it
It’s satin wings touch the ins of my outs
And I’m weightless

But-
Now,
It’s been caught…
In my throat
It’s been grasped
By the human hands of your girlfriend
Who has power over something much frailer than herself
She feels it flutter its soft wings as it fights for its freedom, fights for its life, for the air it breathes
And the air it glides on
And she is satisfied
So she places it right back where it started
But for that second, I felt something so incredible and honest,
If only- for a second.

Artist's Description

The monarch butterfly is also meant to symbolize the cliche of how I feel; monarch butterflies are so very common and so is that “teen love” feeling. (:
Please leave feedback, good and bad, this is my first long poem and I’d very much like to improve.
