Artist's Description

Shud ; the last legionary on planet Simiacle after the great invasion.
A little under a week ago he had watched helplessly as King Octochimp died in a pool of blood and ink, wearing an expression of shock and confusion. Shud was, until that day, the King’s bodyguard; an honorary position since no attack on the King had occurred in well over 500 years. Shud stood rooted to the ground doing nothing, not believing what was happening until it was too late.
In the days that followed that first strike new forces continued to arrive in increasingly larger numbers. The peaceful Simiaclians who remained alive mostly fled to deep dark caves where they were slowly hunted down and killed.
A very small group stayed to fight.
Shud’s family had all died in the first wave, along with his self-respect. Even still he initially had to fight his impulse to flee from the men with flash-sticks. But he did stay, expecting each hour, each day to be his last.
The first man that Shud had killed left him wretching and sobbing for a long time. But Shud had already lost everything dear to him, so he paused, and regained his composure just in time to defend himself and kill another.
The Simiaclian legion (as they called themselves) consisted of Shud, 6 farmers, 2 doctors, and a bar maid. All but he had died within hours of their bold stand.
Shud didn’t know why he was still alive, and he didn’t care.
All he knew was that he would fight. And then he would fight some more.

This was a pencil sketch. I then inked the fine outlines, and did further shading in pencil. Once it was scanned I increased the contrast to make all the dark shading even darker. I then sketched in the grey layer of extra shading using the graphics tablet.
