MISERICORDS

Misericords are some of the finest surviving wood carvings from medieval times, because of their originality of design and artistry.

They are carved projections, topped by a narrow ledge and found on the underside of the choir stalls in medieval churches.

They are usually carved from the same block as the seat itself, and their original purpose was to afford rest to the person standing..

In the early Christan church everyone stood to pray, but even when kneeling was adopted this disadvantaged the old and infirm. By the 11th century these small sitting places were introduced and solved the problem of taking the weight off one’s feet.

Nowadays, the term ‘misericord’ applies not to the purpose but to the decoration, i.e. carving. Most misericord compositions are secular and because they were not on public view were often carved by apprentices learning their craft, or by expert carvers who could indulge their imagination and sense of humor.

This is a reproduction that was taken from an original carving.
