Artist's Description

Went for a wander up Steel Fell in the Lake District at the weekend … thought I would post a few pics taken earlyish in the morning. Steel Fell is located between Thirlmere and Grasmere … I went up from the North end which gives great views of Thirlmere. Thirlmere is a man made reservoir, with the dam being built in the latter part of the 19century. Before the dam there were two smaller lakes. It was built to supply Manchester’s growing industries with water. Manchester is approximately 100 miles away, but is slightly lower than Thirlmere so gravity takes the water on its long journey. When the dam was planned there was considerable opposition and the ‘Thirlmere Defence Association’ was set up to try and stop the flooding of the valley. William Wordsworth was one of the people who opposed the plans. But it was to no avail and the dam was built, the valley flooded and a community destroyed.
Taken with Canon 5D2, f13, iso100, 1/60sec, 14mm lens. Processed with CS4, & photomatix
