Artist's Description

Looking over Thirlmere lake (in Cumbria UK) … Thirlmere is an artificial lake that was created by building a dam at the end of the valley in the late 1800s. I think it was the first stone built dam in the UK. It was created to provide water for Manchester (about 100 miles away). Originally the valley had a couple of smaller lakes and number of houses and farms – this section of the lake contained a community referred to as Armboth. The name still exists on maps etc. This pic was taken from the path up to High Tove.
