I am mostly a marine artist, I live in San Clemente a small seaside spanish arhitectural surfing community in south Orange County, Southern California.

I am at heart a sailor, a sailor who loves to paint the sea, its moods and shifting colors. Also, there is a keen interest in the history of ships and the sailors that have travelled far distances or perished in a dramatic moment of action, in a sea in turmoil. This influence is evident in dramatic watercolors such as “The Gypsy Moth IV” fully caught in the teeth of a gale off Cape Horn or “Red Flag Day” at the San Clemente Pier.

I experienced these conditions as a young sailor in the Royal Navy in the early 1950’s while on hurricane patrol in the West Indies. These images have never been forgotten and are portrayed in my paintings in a way that I feel, only someone who has weathered these incredible gales can tell. Tumult aside, I also treasure the quieter moments of the sea and shelter of a safe harbor. This tone is set in paintings like “Holy Family”, “Illusion” or “Reflections”.

I was born in South Shields, a busy coastal port in the northeast of England with WW2 on the horizon, which makes boats and the salt air firmly deposited in my blood. The town came under heavy bombing and the carnage included the street where I lived. The family evacuated to the ancient cathedral city of Durham and it is this move that placed me where, two centuries earlier in 1740, William Beilby sired seven “ingenious Beilbys”. All would ultimately become famous in the world of art.

Perhaps something may have been handed down through the centuries to this painter who is completely self taught and has never received a lesson…

COMMISIONS: Should you wish to commision me to paint and memorialize an original watercolor of your favourite subject, car, boat or home I can do this for you.

An 11X16 unframed watercolor takes aproximately 30 hours to complete and would cost in the range of $500 plus shipping and larger works are priced according to complexity.
