Artist's Description

This is a large canvas painted with oils and was completed over a period of about three months. It depicts the same figure that is progressing upward and to the right of the canvas. The figure changes in color, in my attempts to show an evolution of change from the physical/tangible world to the more spiritual and incomprehensible realm. The lighter figure is balancing with his hands the flower (Which are actually real, pressed tulip petals) that descend downward and transform into the blast from the rocket, which is near the other hand that holds a broken hourglass with the sands of time spewing out to create an entirely new universe. There is a multitude of symbols and metaphors that are related here, but overall I think there is a balance that is created between them all (as subject, and in coloration). A major idea related in the title, suggests the inevitable growth from the very essence and purity of nature into a more complex, refined, and developed state of existence. This, to me expresses many underlying mysteries and questions pertaining to the direction and technological development of human existence. I often times feel that we live in a time and place where technology precedes our own humanity. Completed in 2002.
