Artist's Description

Painting Original: Oil on Canvas

This is the 3rd and last in the series of commissioned painting of the legend that is Steve McQueen, this one entitled “The Cooler King”.

Being a fan of The King of Cool, The Great Escape movie and a devout motorcyclist myself it was only natural I’d want to paint Cpt. Hilts at some stage.

This is the 2nd in a series of 3 with the original “dude” on the Triumph Bonneville used in the movie which he then bought from the studio in 1971. McQueen then had the bike modified by Bud Ekins, his stunt double in The Great Escape, so he could race it in the desert.

To say I have a hero worship going on with Steve McQueen would be an understatement. I’ve even painted the entrance to my bikers B&B in Killarney the same colors (blue/orange) as the Gulf Porsche McQueen drove in Le Mans (another favorite) and the same color scheme again for my motorcycle magazine and company logo.
