This is a view of the southern portal of Picture Gorge, OR, as seen from the Mascall Formation Overlook of the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. Picture Gorge which begins on U.S. Interstate Highway 26 and finishes on Oregon State Route 19, is so named due to the Native American petroglyphs and pictographs found on the walls of the gorge. Picture Gorge is located in Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Grant County, OR. The Gorge was carved by the John Day River, which is the longest free flowing river in Oregon. Sheep Rock is the pointed rock formation shown in the background of the photo.
