Moray is an unusual Inca archaeological site located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas 30 miles northwest of Cusco, Peru. Situated in a large bowl-shaped depression on 11,500-foot high plateau, the site consists of a number of enormous circular terraced depressions, one nearly 500 feet deep with upward radiating stair steps, which are believed to have been an agricultural research station for studying the effect of temperature on various crops. This belief is based on the design, depth and orientation of the circles in relation to the direction of wind and sun. The temperature varies from top to bottom as much as 59 degrees °F, which is the same temperature variance between sea level farming and high-altitude farming practiced throughout Peru. It is believed that seeds developed on the various terrace levels were sent for use throughout the Inca Empire. This is borne out by pollen analysis studies, which imply that the various terraces consist of soil imported from various regions throughout the Incan Empire. The blue clad figures seen in the photograph are school students on a field trip. September 2011.
