I remember asking

the copper for directions to Times Square and being shot a look like I was from Mars or something. He was a brut of a yank, all square jawed & bulging biceps with a bad case of acne, typical of steroid use. Roid rage was definitely simmering away in this no neck motherf—ker and the expression ‘3 steps from the tree’ came to mind, only this guy was still halfway up it. I can only assume, the recent strong winds had knocked him off his perch. I have always had difficulty dealing with nasty types, and this guy had upset my sensibilities.

With my neural pathways mapped out years ago from brutal beatings as a child, and the nightly ritual that was Uncle Sodomite and his cousins, I had developed an innate ability for dealing with such an affront. Like a conductor of a full orchestra the prelude had commenced, heart rate quickening, senses hyper vigilant, cold piercing eyes and Shostakovich’s Symphony No 10 in E minor playing in my head. Will it be staccato or legato for Officer Krupke? What instrument should I play? There are just too many questions to be answered in life. Perhaps this piece is best played fortissimo.

Having just arrived in the good old US of A, and now running late for the appointment my employers had arranged with the Dentist I decided to take the opportunity to loosen the collar, kick back and have a beer. I could catch up with the Dentist anytime and as a rule I relished … taking my time. Crossing the road to the nearest bar ‘Lebowski’s’ I soon found a prime spot in a booth right next to the window. It was a sunny day and the glass was gorgeously translucent which filled my heart with anticipation. I had a front row seat to the theatrics that were about to unfold.

I had always found the service excellent in the States, and it was only a matter of seconds before the waitress had provided a Millers. So settling back with drink in hand, I turned to the waitress and politely asked
“which way is it to Times Square please Miss?”
