Artist's Description

This very small baby cricket is under 2cms long, and was today learning the art of jumping in very large leaps. Unfortunately he hadn’t quite got his sense of direction together, and landed right in the pond…..I saw him struggling in the water and coaxed him/her onto my finger. After a brief ‘dry-out’, and allowing their photo to be taken (one-handedly, which is a bit awkward with a DSLR) – this little chap decided he was ready for more global adventures and jumped a good four feet onto the grass, vanishing into the undergrowth. I’m always amazed at how something this small can jump so far!! Isn’t the human record somewhere not much over 2 metres? This little guy, size for size, beats that by about 50 times !!
(In case you’re wondering, yes I have got hairy fingers, but then I’m a Hobbit, as per my username ;-)

Canon 550D with Sigma 105/2.8 macro. ISO 400 @ f11. Exmoor, UK. June 2012.

Dave.
