One Ocean

One Ocean, One Sea

The ocean glow surges silently in the moonlit night.
A simmering wave of tranquillity.
An amorous moon sheds a guiding light upon the heaving swell.
Shining softly on tired eyes.
Bestows a beckoning grin upon the weary explorer.

This cool façade harbours a multitude of life.
The surface is broken by the battering of fins.
A chaotic chase. Far below, chaos has order.
Life and death hang on a limb.
The miracles of life breathe eternal.

As far as man can see, the ocean stretches.
Beyond imagination, what mortal can fathom?
This mammoth behemoth attracts man’s mind.
Magnetises man’s heart and summons him to prosperity or peril.
With an abundance of knowledge the challenge is taken.

The ocean decides mans fate. Who shall perish?
Who shall rise above the mists of the sea-maiden?
What riches to behold for the victor?
What depths to descend for the vanquished?
What hell to endure for those who dare?

The victor is the champion.
The redeemer of good faith.
He who has respect, calm and good grace.
He knows the boundaries, he knows the score.
Balance is the Zen by which he lives.

The vanquished has clutched one too many.
One time too often.
Has dispersed with sensibilities.
Squandered all he has been given.
Plundered all he has ever taken.

For the victor, a life of a seafaring man.
An endearing reverence for this untamed gargantuan.
A mutual respect of life and limb.
Natural order, balance maintained.
A symbiotic liaison has ensued.

For the vanquished, a perilous fall.
A final grave of deafening silence.
The transparencies of life are refracted below.
The ocean floods the senses.
A return to the beginning of time.

One Ocean, One Sea. Boundless and free.
Makes no demands. Has no qualms.
Lays in wait. No hidden agendas. No foreign affairs.
No political pretenses. No ambitious aspirations.
No ambiguities entrenched in its soul.

Far below, contrasting centres.
Rainbows of gold. Clouds of grey.
Thrashing of water. Swimming like silk.
Jagged coral and smooth seabed.
Golden as the sun, as pale as the sand.

What terror man can create.
How can he just take and take.
From an ocean that keeps on giving.
A dreary rock sits idle in wait.
As a repugnant life form reels in its prey.

Gnashing teeth and puckering lips.
Tearing to pieces cutting of flesh.
Feeding one’s ego, feeding one’s soul.
Where can this lead us? Where will it go?
Will it ever stop? This crime of our time.

Depletion of stocks. Eradicating species.
From mans hand the pillaging continues.
What wonders behold? What stories untold,
Will be destroyed by the callousness of an unsavoury soul?
What will become of the One Ocean we know?

A source of life’s beginnings and ends.
Could be lost in the future in a wave of greed.
Unless we take as is given, just what we need.
And then we will see.
One Ocean, One Sea, for you and for me.
