Artist's Description

Original Size: 4’ by 8’, Original Medium: Oils and sand on masonite.
The right panel involves imagery of personal training areas. The painting is entered via the track, but this time it is the track that we train on. In the foreground is the throwing circle, which is inviting, open to anyone, but the water and snow make the area seem deserted. The track above takes us into the tunnel where we run under for recovery on easy training days.
The cool pallet is refreshing and mimics the sensation of cleansing after a hard training day. The presence of snow and rain signify the seasonal aspects of training; as time passes, seasons change, as does training cycles. Other forms in this panel are the staircase and the adjacent wall.
The staircase leading to nowhere is another element which adds to the confusing nature of the piece. In existence the staircase takes us from one training environment to another, but it is blocked by the coliseum once again. The many walls, levels and passages throughout the barrier seem maze like. Again the hierarchy of training persists, that of the foundation being the work and if the structure of periodization succeeds, the path will be open for the athlete to reach their goal.
The sand in this piece again further distinguishes elements of the panel. The track’s presence is solidified with the weight created from the sand, and helps force our eyes along the lanes and down the tunnel. The architecture of the Coliseum is again strengthened by the granules. Once again the barrier becomes powerful and dominating compared to the accompanying architecture of the painting. In the end, displaying the powerful factors which overtake so many athletes dreams before they can be realized.
