Artist's Description

Original Size: 4’ by 8’, Original Medium: Oils and sand on masonite.
The composition of the left panel begins by encountering Panathinaiko Stadium, which is the birthplace of the modern Olympic games. The track flips out, and with the use of line we are allowed to freely enter the panel. Suddenly, this invitation is rejected by the coliseum, which abruptly flattens our view. Our once open path along the track travels into a mysterious dark tunnel, and the inviting staircase is shut off by a large metal gate. The large barrier creates a divide between the track and the more colourful futuristic structures of the top.
The upper portion contains two Olympic stadiums, the stadiums from the first games in 1896, that the 1976 games from Montreal. The two stadiums are composed to become one united structure, this unification signifies the passing of time from the start of the modern games to the futuristic state of the present day. More importantly, this union signifies the common sustaining dream of competing at the Olympic games. As time passes, the architecture changes, but the goal remains the same, thus uniting the structures.
The compositional effects are enhanced by the use of sand. The texture adds more substance to the barrier of the coliseum. This also implements three dimensionality to the work in certain locations, while enhancing the flatness of other areas. The concluding impact of the texture is solidifying the architecture in which it is used. In this panel, it is the barrier between the foreground and the dreamlike upper image which is enhanced. The coliseum becomes the most concrete form in the painting and forces our eyes to apprehend its dominating qualities.
