Artist's Description

The flowers of a yellow Bulbine frutescens in our garden at Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Bulbine frutescens is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae. The plant is found mainly in Southern Africa, with few species extending into tropical Africa and a few species in Australia. This is a popular, waterwise garden plant, especially when planted en masse as a ground cover, or in rock gardens. It is also cultivated for its medicinal properties. The fresh leaf produces a jelly-like juice that is wonderful for burns, rashes, blisters, insect bites, cracked lips, acne, cold sores, mouth ulcers and areas of cracked skin.
