Artist's Description

The flowers of a summer-flowering aloe, Aloe perfoliata, in our garden at Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
’n Krans-aalwyn se somerblomme in ons tuin.

Aloe perfoliata (the Mitre Aloe or Christmas Aloe) is a true Cape mountain and winter rainfall species that flowers during summer in South Africa from December to February.
Until recently this species was known as Aloe mitriformis, so named because of the resemblance of its rosette to a mitre or bishop’s cap in times of drought. The leaf margins are armed with harmless, small white teeth, which turn yellow to dark brown as leaves become older. Aloe perfoliata occurs mostly in groups. The flowers are dull to bright red and appear in dense arrangements on the branched stalks. Up to five flowering branches may be present at one time.
