Artist's Description

A well-camouflaged Cicada, Platypleura capensis, in a tree in our garden at Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
’n Sonbesie in ons tuin op Jansenville.

Cicadas (Cicadomorpha or Cicadodoidea) are found on all continents except Antarctica. Some 150 of the estimated 3 000 species are found in South Africa.
Cicadas are medium-sized to large insects that are famous (or infamous!) for the males’ ‘singing’ abilities. They are quite common but incredibly difficult to catch so they are poorly represented in insect collections.
