Artist's Description

I was up on the summit of Mount Rose Highway preparing to shoot some images at dusk when I turned around to look at Lake Tahoe for a moment. This scene caught my attention immediately and made me think about the Washoe People, as I have been reading up on the tribe lately.

Basically, the Wa She Shu, or Washoe Indians have inhabited the area for century after century. The tribe itself believes “the people” have lived in the area forever. Da ow aga or Lake Tahoe, was the heart of the land. The Washoe People believe the environment as a whole is to be considered sacred and worthy of respect if humans are to survive. And now that other people have inhabited these lands, the Washoe People still ask that all individuals who visit these special lands become protectors and guardians of their sacred lands.
