Artist's Description

A Vainika is someone who plays the Veena, a South Indian stringed instrument.

The veena is sometimes described as a South Indian “lute” but the word lute brings to mind something much smaller. The veena is about four to four and a half feet long. It looks somewhat like a sitar, the more famous Indian stringed instrument from the North, except that the veena also has a big, somewhat spherical “glob” (I don’t know how else to describe it) at the top of its long neck.

Well, I hadn’t had much opportunity to post images at my fav Incredible India group for a while and I am happy to finally have some great pictures of Vainikas.

This was taken on 27 April at the Concourse at The Esplanade. Throughout April, the Concourse had been featuring stringed instruments. I knew some Indian instruments would finally show up.

I am so glad I was there. Despite microphones obstructing much of the view, I managed a good crop of images.
