Artist's Description

The pipa is a pear-shaped four-stringed Chinese instrument. It is one of the most popular Chinese instruments and has been played for nearly two thousand years in China.

It is a highly expressive instrument that can depict anything from a raging battle to a peaceful countryside. And so the instrumentalist is equally expressive – a joy to photograph.

I took over a hundred shots of this young lady who performed the pipa solo at The Esplanade Concourse last night, April 24.

One of the things I’ve learned from photographing instrumentalists is that, very often, they look their most graceful when they are NOT playing, during those short pauses in the music when the hand leaves the instrument, if only for a fraction of a second.

I thought her performance was masterful – until I heard this pipa maestro on YouTube.
