Artist's Description

Sensoji Temple, at Asakusa district in the Northern part of Tokyo, is said to be the oldest temple in Japan.

Also known as the Asakusa Kannon Temple, it is a Buddhist temple dedicated to Kannon. This is the Japanese name of the “Goddess of Mercy” whom the Chinese call Kwan Im, or Quan Yin.

The temple is vastly popular, more with locals than tourists.

Near the entrance to the temple is a large urn in which incense is burned. My friend and guide Mikio says the Japanese believe that if one covers the smoke from the urn over the part of the body that has an ailment, that part will recover.

When I went up to the temple and looked back down, I saw the evening sun lighting up the ‘healing smoke’ beautifully.

Somehow, I felt strongly that this image should be in black and white, although I had posted a color version here.
