Artist's Description

This is a color version of The Miserable Musician, which I posted some months back.

With my new Lightroom 2.0 software, I decided to revisit some old images and I thought this rather colorful, having as much merit as (or perhaps even greater than) the black and white version.

One challenge in this image is to have the song lyrics – on the white piece of paper – legible. To achieve this would normally make the entire image too dark. And to darken just the paper would have been a bit troublesome.

In the end, I did a very simple experiment that took me no more than a minute.

First, I darkened the entire image. Then, using a very large brush with exposure set at approximately +1.20, I “painted” over just the right half of the image to brigten the musician. I realised it was ok to leave the left side of the image darker.

So what you see is an image with the right side about 1.2 stops brighter than the left side. It works perfectly in this instance.

Image was taken in January at Thaipusam 2008, Singapore.
