Artist's Description

This comes from many years back now on my first trip to the Outer Hebrides. I was exploring Berneray in the Sound of Harris, and having taken photos of the long expanse of beach I took a shortcut across the machair to get back to the hostel. On Berneray this forms a wide expanse of sandy grassland which was studded with buttercups at the time (as it late Spring). The gulls nest there, and disturbed, they flew up and buzzed me a few times. But the thing that made this landscape for me was the contrast between the flat and verdant grassland and the dark blue of the distant mountains (on Harris), accentuated by the layers of cloud. I get a strong feeling from this ancient landscape.

I’ve turned the view into this oil painting (on board), measuring 20 inches by 8, capturing the essence of what I saw (though it looks better in ‘the flesh’ than it photographs for RB)
