Artist's Description

Caldey Island sits just off the coast of South Wales (UK) near Tenby. During the summer there is a ferry service to the island giving you the chance to escape the crowds of Tenby. The island is run by the stunning monastery at its centre, with permitted walks around most of the interesting parts. At the far end of the island a lighthouse stands guard over the grassland and cliffs. Skylarks dance and chirrup high over the grass, whilst gulls swoop gracefully on the cliffs below.

In this picture I’ve attempted to capture the uncut grassland around the lighthouse and a few of the visitors walking one of the trails. I’ve painted it in oils on a 16×12 inch board. The grass effect was achieved using an old stubbly brush to gently scrape the layers of paint upwards.
