Artist's Description

September 2017 and the food festival coincided with probably the wettest day of the year in Romsey (Hampshire, UK). The canopies and umbrellas reminded me of Renoir’s famous painting ‘Umbrellas’, so I went out looking for a view that would provide a modern equivalent. Eventually I found that the upstairs of a local shop offered what I was looking for – a view right along the street, high enough to see more than the immediate few people. The people in this painting are largely fictitious, loosely based on the people in my photos, though there is one interloper who appears to have time traveled from Renoir’s time – can you spot them?

Painted oil on board 8×20 inches – probably the most complicated and labour intensive painting I’ve done to date
