Artist's Description

This painting comes from a photo I took on a trip to Durness (North coast of Scotland) back in 2006. A mile from the village lies ‘Smoo’ the largest sea cave in Britain. The main cavern is easily accessible at low tide, and when you turn around you get this amazing view of the gorge leading out to the sea. When the weather is right (which seems to be virtually never) you can take a tour deeper into the cave, first by boat past the waterfall that plunges into the cave, then on foot, and I understand by boat again further on. Up on the cliffs you can easily spot the river disappearing into a sinkhole that feeds the cave waterfall.

Painted in oil on a 16×20 inch board. The internal cave walls are nearly all a black obtained by mixing vandyke brown and cobalt blue (except where I’ve slightly lightened the left side). I’ve used different directions of brush strokes so the walls change according to how light falls on the picture.
