Artist's Description

This image comes from when I walked Wainwrights Coast To Coast back in 1998. Unlike most, I walked from East to West, saving the Lake District for last. At this point I had just crossed the boggy summit of Nine Standards Rigg, and was facing the Vale Of Eden near Kirkby Stephen. It had been a dry and partly cloudy day to the East of the peak, but ahead to the west shower after shower marched along the wide valley, rainbows appearing every few minutes. It looked like I would be running the gauntlet to cross the valley, but that was for the next day. Instead I had only to descend to Kirkby Stephen for the night.

I originally painted this in 1998. This much improved version was painted in oil on 20×16 inch board in a recent repaint covering the original. I’ve found that painting a convincing rainbow is possibly one of the most difficult things to do, as it needs parallel bands of bright colour, which is also transparent and brighter than the cloud behind. I think this is getting somewhere close!
