Artist's Description

M. C. Escher was one of my favorite artists when I was young, and his work was influential in my decision to pursue a career in art. This series from Spring 2018 takes its title from Escher’s three Metamorphosis prints he produced. In these prints, simple shapes gradually deform into various images through many stages, before eventually returning to the simple shapes from the beginning.

The deformations in the “Vernal Metamorphosis” series are more abstract than in Escher’s prints, but there is an underlying similarity. The kaleidoscopic reflections that begin in any corner gradually change as you move around the image, sometimes repeating, but usually not. Each image in the series begins with a stock photo of leaves. Then the Filter Forge filter Variable Kaleidoscope by inujima is applied. I then bring the resulting images into Photoshop, combine them with images created with the Filter Forge filter Watercolor Wash by joBox, and perform final adjustments to tone, color, contrast, saturation, etc.. Since these images are actually reflected photos, you will see the detail of the leaves at larger sizes.
