Artist's Description

The “Botanica Malefactum” contains a bound, badly-preserved collection of thirteen botanical illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian. Normally such a collection would not be worth much, as the “Botanica” is really quite moldy, and many much better-preserved collections of her illustrations exist. However on closer examination of its pages, its unique feature is revealed – the illustrations have been printed over still older engravings, creating a palimpsest. The older engravings appear to be circles, geometrical lines, and inscriptions in an unknown alphabet – all indicative of a magical grimoire. The truly odd thing about the “Botanica” is that there doesn’t appear to have been any attempt to scrape the parchment clean of the earlier illustrations before the final printing – normally an important step in re-using the pages of earlier manuscript…

“Botanica Malefactum 8 – Moonflower“ combines: an illustration by Maria Sibylla Merian from the Getty Open Content Program, two images I created in ArtMatic (one heavily stylized in Photoshop), a texture created with the Mister Retro Machine Wash Photoshop filter, numerous Photoshop drip brushes, and images rendered in Filter Forge with the following filters: Asteroid Displacement, Rune Circle, Unholy Growth, Watercolor Wash, and Wrinkled Parchment
