Artist's Description

Accumulating gradually over the years, the “Phantoms” series is a bit of an accident. These images began life as supporting actors – whenever I needed to add an element into one of my layered compositions, I would browse through my extensive collection of ArtMatic renders to see if I could find anything appropriate. Sometimes I would use the image as it was, but many times I decided that I wanted something less obtrusive. In these cases, I would often filter the render, using Photoshop’s “Find Edges” filter in the early years, then Flaming Pear’s “Organic Edges”• in later years. Both of these filters search for high-contrast differences in tonality and turn these differences into thin lines. Occasionally, I would use one of these images for a project, but in general they were never meant to be seen as stand-alone images. In the Spring of 2014, I did an idle search for these images, just to see how many I had, and realized that many of them worked well together as a series. Hopefully, this series will continue to grow in the future…

•Everything dies, including Photoshop filters. A free download from Flaming Pear as part of their “Creative Pack”, they stopped updating it around 2009. The newest version of Photoshop that can host it is CS5, and then only in 32 bit mode. At some point, I’ll have to upgrade my OS to the point where CS5 can’t run, and at that point, I’ll have lost one of my most important artistic tools.
