Artist's Description

Over the years, you’ve noticed that when the “Atlas” is acting like a more traditional atlas and actually showing you a place, those locales tend to not exactly be vacation spots… This plate seems to depict a blasted desert in which every single tree died long ago, a mountain of sand, and a sandstorm looks to be in progress. You’re also sure you saw something in the foreground looking at you with hungry eyes just a moment ago, but now you’ve lost track of it…

“Color Plate 159” combines a photograph from stock.xchng member Enrico Nunziati and a painting created by my father, Gus Maier.

“The Atlas Of Dreams” is an ongoing project begun in 1999. Each plate is composed of several different images combined to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Source images include (but are not limited to) 19th century engravings, NASA photos of space and the Earth’s surface, abstract images, the artwork of my father, Gus Maier, and of course my own artwork – recycled and reused. Watch out for stray butterflies, fish, snakes, and other animals…
