Artist's Description

This plate seems at first an abstract jumble of lines and color, but experience tells you that creatures sometimes “camouflage” themselves in the pages of the Atlas. Sure enough, your sense of being watched leads you to notice the eye and then the rest of the animal. You start a bit, since it’s so close. If it were a real sea turtle, it would crush you. Thankfully, the Atlas seems no heavier than before.

“Color Plate 150” combines a photograph from stock.xchng member Angela Franklin and a painting created by my father, Gus Maier.

“The Atlas Of Dreams” is an ongoing project begun in 1999. Each plate is composed of several different images combined to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Source images include historic engravings, NASA photos of space and the Earth’s surface, abstract images, the artwork of my father: Gus Maier, and of course my own artwork – recycled and reused. Watch out for stray butterflies, fish, snakes, and other animals…
