Artist's Description

In 1999, my father, Gus Maier, took a series of photographs of ice that he had frozen in trays in our family’s freezer. When I saw the photographs, I loved the colorful crystals he had captured. Several years later in December 2002, I persuaded him to let me borrow the film and scanned several frames in preparation for creating a Winter series.

What I mostly remember from making this series was that it nearly killed my Mac G3 to create “Crystalline Blue 1”. While it was a pretty respectable computer for its day, the file sizes were so large (the end result was a 430MB layered file, sized at 12295px x 12295px) that Photoshop brought the whole system to a stand-still for over an hour at a time while it rotated the images so I could create a tiled image with six-fold symmetry. I had to do this several times, with several restarts when Photoshop crashed, to get the final images.
