A call for change...

Today was a bit special for me on RB.

I’m no pro photographer but in the last 6 months, something happened, photography has bitten me and I’m infected with a passion to create art that people will want to look at and feel a moment that I have witnessed.

I joined Red Bubble after being nagged by my mate Alex Cearns who uses the Bubble to share some of the best wildlife photography in Australia.

But something was missing here for me.

Last week I wrote a piece about wanting to have my work critiqued. We’re all learning here bar the few professionals whose skill is undeniable. I for one am still learning. I’ve had my D80 for a year.

RB doesn’t have a facility for critiquing because it espouses a ‘Play Nice’ scenario… And that’s great but after posting a few shots where I wasn’t getting any feedback at all I realised that I wasn’t benefiting from the exposure my shots were getting here.

So I did a wee moan.

In less than a week my great photography friend Sascha (aabzimaging) was kind enough to take on the role of teacher and critiqued (sometimes harshly) the shots I was putting up of seascapes and portraits.

One week later and I am featured in Waves with ‘And They Came’ .

It may be a small step for photography but it’s a major event for me. I’ve listened to everything I’ve been told on exposures, composition and structure and finally I have a shot that hit the mark.

If I hadn’t been critiqued, it wouldn’t have happened.

Is there room for a separate stream of replies that critiques a work? Constructive criticism of a shot, an angle, a composition or treatment… Wouldn’t we all benefit from that?

I think so and in a week I’ve managed to demonstrate it with a technique I’ve been practicing for one month.

If you’re listening RB, how about a second stream of responses that critiques a work rather than compliments and lauds.

I think it would help everyone here and if you think you would benefit too, let me know and I’ll take it up with RB.

I love this site but I want to learn and it’s only through experts sharing their skills and opinions with us that we can learn together.

Rant over.

Thanks to Sascha and Alex for helping me achieve what I want to.

Rich
