Artist's Description

Our first (and as it turned out, our last) stop was in Skagway, AK, which was a sleepy little town until the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896. Skagway offered the most direct route from Alaska to Canada’s Yukon Territory – a 21 mile trail up a mountain and over White Pass into British Columbia, Canada. Today, tourists are traveling up and down this same mountain via bus and train…(up by train, down by bus, or vice versa).
Either way, the ride and view are spectacular…and a little bit scary, at times. We had the “up by train, down by bus” version of this trip.

This photo features the ruggedly beautiful scenery of Alaska. There’s still quite a bit of snow along the way, with increasing amounts upon ascent. Alaska had a record snowfall winter last year, so there’s more snow than usual, especially in the higher elevations. If you look carefully, you can see a thin, light colored line just under the bottom of the whitecap on the mountain in the background. That’s the road to the summit, which is where we switched modes of transportation with the passengers who rode to our destination in the bus
