Artist's Description

An absolute must do on the North Island is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Considered by most as New Zealand’s premier day walk….I saw no reason to disagree…is just the most amazing volcanic landscape. The crossing is 19.4km and pretty strenuous but definitely worth every step. Mount Ngauruhoe, aka Mount Doom is your classic conical volcano and was the setting for Mordor in the Lord of the rings Trilogy. I this pano Ngauruhoe is seen from above the South Crater about half way into the crossing. Around 500 people complete the crossing every day and unfortunately most never get to the landforms uncovered, due to changeable weather and cloud cover..
