Artist's Description

2013 Mixed Media watercolour, acrylic, colored pencil, pastel on 400 series pastel paper, mounted on 10 ply board 18×24″

From the Series “Live The Moment”

This young California Latina poses for me from time to time. Here in one of my favorite techniques. I first started leaning how to use this technique… in the 7th grade, way back when, and improved on it in high school… my teacher was a working fabulously talented freelance commercial artist, as well as my advanced class art teacher. One of my life goals has always been, to be as good an artist as he was in all medias, I think I am almost there…but I keep pushing myself, as my next piece of work will be better than the last…

And always adding little tricks I learned in 25 years working as a commercial artist/illustrator/graphic designer/photographer… and still learning, I believe as artists we never quit learning, if I make it to 100 years, I think I will be really, really good at it…

I first lightly sketch the model, live sitting is better… or from photograph, that I take… is good as I can work on it later… And best if I want to do an abstract… is work from memory…

And then quickly… about a minute or so lay in light watercolour washes wet on wet, and quickly drying with a hair dryer, where I want the effects I’m looking for… next again quickly maybe 5 to 10 minutes lay in acrylic washes some heavy and some light wet on wet in some areas… drying where II don’t want the colors to run together and create a different color…

Photograph what I have done and see how it looks like in the camera, decide where I want to make changes additions etc… I don’t always photograph at this point, as I sometimes… stop working on it and go do something else… and come back to it later in the day or let sit for a day or two… or longer

Then I finish it up using pastel and color pencil… I love the hatch marks of hard pastel to come thru in the finished work… that is the beauty of this style… to show the bold hard pastel marks, giving it a bold illustrative approach, but still a painting… I prefer this look to the photograph looking painting, that looks more like a photograph then a painting, I charge double for that style, (any journeyman artist) can create that style… to look like a photograph… Picasso said… “if you want it to look like a photograph… Take a photo and be done with it” finish by spraying fix on the pastel… let dry throughly… and then use a matte or gloss varnish spray… or brush on if you want the brush strokes to show… be sure to photograph the work before you varnish to avoid reflections.
