Artist's Description

A shot of the boat docks on the Fox River in winter, when we had a great deal of mist. I like the red against the white and the strong geometric composition. Done with the Olympus E500 and their basement-rate 14-45 zoom; spot metered off that 18% gray decking almost in the center and shot in RAW and then developed in Photoshop with the Olympus RAW plug-in. Though, to be honest, all I did was up the gamma a bit; other than that, it’s straight from the camera. (I like it when that happens, though it’s rare enough.) It’s handheld even though the light really wasn’t sufficient. I propped the camera on top of a handy trashcan.

I also almost slipped into the river trying to get other shots while walking down a slippery sea wall.

Sigh. Art is so damn dangerous. Also spontaneous. I just happenned to be at the library when it was foggy; I’d noticed these docks before and wanted to shoot them, but the mist really grabbed me. My pocket camera really wasn’t up to the task, so I got my girlfriend to drive me back home for a real camera and got this. F/8 and be there, I suppose. But I can’t wait to get an E3, just for the image stabilization. Trash cans aren’t always there when you need them.
