Artist's Description

This, to me, is perfect . . . and beauty . . .and subtle . . . and not-subtle.

I’m very hard to please, but this works. For me.

And it’s just a section of sidewalk I found interesting.

The name is a physics joke. Particles always take such divergent , beautiful paths after being broken out of their confinement. Kind of like people, kind of Zen, if you think about it.

I spent quite a bit of time during the late summer last year photographing side walks, asphalt, sewer grates and telephone poles. They take a surprising amount of work to get just right; I usually spend a couple of months playing with things, setting them aside to get some perspective, then coming back to the image. To be honest, there’s work I’ve started over 15 years ago that I’ve only recently gotten done well enough that I’m happy with it.

Shot RAW with an Olympus E500 and 14-45 lens handheld in the early morning sunlight. (The neighborhood kids were crossing the street for school half a block away; I definitely got some weird looks.) Olympus Studio to deal with the RAW file, CS3 to play with the different layers and give it some dynamic range and “otherworldly” character.

I may actually take this and do a photorealistic study of it in oil. There’s something about taking something real, as an abstract but in a photo (which is “real”) and then just re-abstracting it with paint that appeals to the perverse side of my nature.

Have I mentioned I was a difficult kid?

But it seems to me you could do something with the texture of paint that would complement the texture of the concrete, and might make this more effective once it’s out in the “real” world.

Should I ramble so much? I mean . . . are you interested in what I think about what I do?
