Artist's Description

Flowers bought for my girlfriend and saved for a couple of weeks so they were good and dead so I could use them.

The title is from a poem by William Dunbar. It’s Latin for “The fear of death confounds (or confuses) me.”

It’s a rare instance of me using a title for something other than that it sounds enigmatic.

Olympus E510, 14-45 at 14mm, on a tripod under tungsten lights and balanced for daylight. Program Mode (IS on, 3 shot burst with 1 E.V. increments, RAW, ISO 200, settings dialed to 0 as I get better results in post . . . with exceptions, I find that this gets what I want about 90% of the time. And there are times I don’t use it as I want something it won’t give me, but . . . mostly, it does. Call me lazy and overworked, but . . . when I don’t need to think about the box and the glass, I can pay more attention to the moment.) Photoshopped; I added a layer and dropped a Vered texture into it, then put it underneath again. I flattened the image, added a masking layer and dropped an image of a piece of cardboard I roughly painted with goauche and scanned into Photoshop. (Knocks out the edges.)

This was inspired by a photo my girlfriend took. It was a sink and this isn’t, but it was a “feel” that I admired. I hate that, but you can’t argue with results.

Ipso facto, quid pro quo . . . . Damn that Latin.

I’m . . . not happy, not mad about it. I’m groping towards something. I feel I’m headed in the right direction, but I also feel that the ’shopping needs to be more integrated with the image.

Suggestions are encouraged? Tell me why I suck. I’ll listen.
