Artist's Description

In 1976 I was given the job of painting this Army camp water tower. The tower is deep in the woods and a long way from any other building. At the time it was covered in flaking green paint. It was one of the hottest summers on record . My boss at the time was afraid of heights so he always stayed on the ground. I had told him that the flaking paint was really hard to get off and this job would take some time. In fact it was really easy to get off.
I hatched a plan . I used to arrive in the morning and work till lunch then sun bathe in the afternoon. I had a cold box for my wine and cheese, and the radio was playing all the latest sounds . The boss would arrive and shout up ‘how you doing’ I would reply, ’ its coming off slowly, but its hard going!‘. You so rarely get jobs like that so I had to take advantage. I felt a little guilty but they were paying really bad wages so the guilt didn’t last.
I paid for my lazy days sunbathing a few weeks later when I was given the job of painting the toilet block, a very unpleasant task.
