Salvation: A dialogue between two vampires

The corpse lay at his feet. “This is our salvation,” he whispered. “Our life.”

Darius’ eyes scanned from the body to the figure across from him and then back to the body. Darius’ face had grown shockingly pale despite his dark brown complexion. The figure continued to speak.

“Our own personal Jesus. They all are. Every last one,” he chuckled and then grew very serious. “Were you a religious man, Darius?”Darius slowly shook his head though he had not heard the question, his eyes still fixated on the crumpled form that lay close to him.“Nevertheless, newbie, they are our life force. Our ‘food’ as some of our more savage brethren might say.“The Christ shed his blood for them and they shed theirs for us. The cycle of life,” he sighed. “It goes on and on. They are our Christ,” he repeated, dipping his index finger into the small amount of blood that ran on the floor, then wiping it on the near-by rug.“And where does that leave us, Pierre?” Darius finally said, breaking his silence.Pierre, caught off-guard by the sudden interruption, looked down at the corpse, motioned and said, “Not there.”Darius, unsatisfied, reasserted himself at the ridiculous reply. “Not there,” he near-whined. “That is no answer, Pierre.” The disdain rang clearly in his tone.Pierre waved his left hand lightly, wishing not to be bothered; to regain his train of thought. He bent down and examined his victim’s face. A mere twenty minutes ago she had been beautiful. He gently stroked her hair like she was some beloved pet.“Death is cruel,” he started, his voice showing no emotion. “And it is something that you and I shall not taste.”

He paused for a beat and added thoughtfully, "Well, not naturally at least. We are the timeless. That brings us to point two. Life, which we now have an abundance of, is even more cruel! We can make no attachments. Mortals pass in the blink of an eye. Gods arise and crumble as centuries continue on. Even some of our own brethren will expire. So be smart. Make no attachments. Even I must view you, my recent companion, as another who will eventually come and go.

“The only two things that will last are the flow of blood and the flow of time. One is our redemption. The other, our prison! You keep this in mind and you will go a long way. But if you ignore this advice, you are inviting inner pain. Do you have any idea what millennia of inner pain can feel like? Finding no solace ever, anywhere?”Darius shook his head again though Pierre expected no answer. He merely grunted at the gesture as he stared past Darius into the darkness, seeing one hundred times more than the average mortal ever would.“Let us just say,” he finally continued, “that if there is such thing as ‘hell,’ then eternal inner suffering is what it must be. And we are forced then to be the eternal inhabitants of Hades. That is where it leaves us,” he said, at last answering Darius’ earlier question.“That is what our beloved God has bestowed to us, the gift of eternal life taken from Adam. Only now attached with the catch of eternal damnation. Redemption not received through the blood of His son. Rather through the blood of His unwanted children, his bastards. The wretched of the earth.”“Could it be to us God is dead?” Darius half-stated, half-pondered.“God is not dead,” Pierre said with much thought. “She is dead.” He pointed at the corpse. “God may be the only One to outlast us.” He added as an after-thought, “And maybe the Devil.”Pierre, concluding his thoughts, arose from the green armchair and walked past the body and out the door. Darius followed right behind him, shutting the door in one motion, never looking back. They disappeared into the night like shadows.

Artist's Description

This is one of my few attempts at actual story writing. I don’t do it often. I have had plans for some time to make this into a longer story, possibly a novel. I would love any feedback on it.
